Across the Line in York County

Clover is just across the South Carolina line from Gastonia, and it has grown steadily, which keeps concrete contractors busy there. The population was 5,094 in 2010, 6,671 in 2020 and an estimated 7,659 in 2025. New homes bring new requests for patios and driveway extensions, while older homes near downtown need repair and replacement.

How Clover got its name

Clover began as a railway stop in 1876, midway between Yorkville and Gastonia. A water tank was built for the trains, and local lore says the overflow from the tank fed a patch of clover, so the stop became known as the clover patch. The town was officially incorporated in 1887. Several cotton mills operated here, many until after World War II. The Clover Downtown Historic District and Bethel Presbyterian Church are on the National Register.

US 321 forms Clover's Main Street, and the town square is where Main meets SC 55.

Older homes around downtown

Homes near the old town center often have concrete that has served for decades. Common problems include cracked driveways, heaved walks near trees and steps that have settled away from the porch. We look at the cause before we recommend a fix: a downspout, a tree root, soft fill or simply age. Some problems can be repaired. Others need a fresh slab on a better base.

New homes and new patios

With Clover's growth, many homeowners now have a new house with a small back stoop and a builder-grade driveway. Typical upgrades include:

  • A bigger patio with room for a table and a grill
  • A stamped concrete surface for a finished look
  • A walk from the driveway to the backyard gate
  • A wider driveway for an extra car
  • A pad for a shed or a hot tub

We check the soil near new foundations before pouring, since fill that was not compacted will settle.

Ground and water

Clover sits at about 794 feet. Henry's Knob, a hill about 1,120 feet high west of town, was the site of a former kyanite mine and is now an EPA Superfund Alternative Site because of acid mine drainage and groundwater contamination. That is a reminder that what is in the ground matters. For a typical home project, our concern is simpler: a firm base, good drainage and a slab sloped away from the house.

Work in South Carolina follows South Carolina rules, and we check with the town on permits before we start.

Front entries

A new front walk and steps change how a house looks from the street. On older Clover homes, a simple broom-finished walk with clean edges often suits the house. On newer homes, a stamped border or a colored entry pad adds a finished touch without much extra cost or upkeep.

Between two state parks

Clover's encyclopedia entry lists both Crowders Mountain State Park and Kings Mountain State Park nearby, and Henry's Knob rises to about 1,120 feet west of town, well above Clover's own 794 feet. Ground that climbs toward the west means some lots slope noticeably. On those, we set slabs so water runs off to the side and away from the house, and we look at whether a low patio edge needs extra compacted fill.

On the South Carolina side, SC 811 marks utilities, and we place that call before any digging.
