Concrete Help for Lowell Homeowners
Lowell is a small city east of Gastonia, and for concrete contractors the work here often starts with older concrete. Should a cracked driveway be patched or replaced? Why does the walk keep sinking near the porch? Can a stained patio be made to look decent again? Lowell had 3,654 residents and 1,598 housing units in 2020, and the median age was 40.2. The town dates to a mill built in 1848, so plenty of its concrete has had decades to age.
A town that wanted to be a textile center
The settlement dates to 1848, when the Woodlawn Mill was built on the South Fork Catawba River. Grading for the Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line Railway in 1870 led to a small depot called Wright's Station. The town was incorporated in 1879 and named after Lowell, Massachusetts, in hopes of becoming a similar textile center. The Lowell Teacherage on West First Street, built in 1924 to house teachers, is a Gaston County Historic Property.
The South Fork borders the city on the north. Lowell is in the Cramerton Watershed, and the city sits at about 712 feet.
Repair or replace?
This is the first question for most Lowell jobs, and the honest answer depends on what is wrong.
Hairline cracks with no movement are usually cosmetic. We can clean and seal them to keep water out.
Cracks that have opened wide or have one side higher than the other mean the ground under the slab has moved. Sealing the crack does not fix the cause. If the section is small, we may cut it out and replace just that panel.
Surface flaking and pitting come from freeze-thaw, deicing salt or a weak finish when the concrete was poured. If the slab underneath is solid, resurfacing may work. If the damage is deep, replacement is the better value over time.
Sunken sections near the house often trace back to a downspout that dumps water right at the slab edge or to fill around the foundation that settled. We fix the water problem along with the concrete.
When it is time for new concrete
If replacement is the answer, we break out the old slab, haul it away, and look at what is underneath. Old driveways in town were often placed on bare dirt. We set a compacted stone base, place reinforcement where it makes sense, and pour a mix suited to outdoor use in a climate that freezes some nights each winter. Control joints go in at a spacing that fits the slab, and we cure the concrete properly instead of letting it dry out fast in the sun.

Getting around town
Lowell sits on I-85, US 29/74 (Wilkinson and Franklin boulevards) and NC 7, with Norfolk Southern freight trains running through town. At the estimate we check how close a ready-mix truck can get to the forms. If your driveway meets a state road, we check what is required at the street before starting work there.
Schools and the new campus
Lowell Elementary and Holbrook Middle serve the town, and new middle and high school buildings are under construction on the Lowell campus. George Poston Park, a county park with ballfields and a mountain bike trail, sits northwest of town on Lowell-Spencer Mountain Road. Streets near schools and parks see more foot traffic, which makes level front walks and flush driveway edges worth the attention.

Lowell Questions
Can you just replace the broken part of my driveway?
Often, yes, if the break is limited to one or two panels between joints. We cut along the joint lines, remove the damaged section and pour a new one. The color will not match exactly at first.
Why does my sidewalk keep sinking by the porch?
The usual cause is water from a downspout or soft fill near the foundation. We look for the source and fix it along with the walk.
Is sealing worth it for an older patio?
If the concrete is still sound, a sealer helps keep water and stains out. It will not fix cracks that are moving or a slab that has settled.
