Concrete in Kings Mountain
Kings Mountain is about 30 miles west of Charlotte on I-85, and it is one of the larger cities we serve as concrete contractors outside Gastonia. Its population was 10,296 in 2010, 11,142 in 2020 and an estimated 12,117 in 2025. Most of the city is in Cleveland County, with a small eastern part in Gaston County. We work in both.
The mountain and the name
Kings Pinnacle, at the city's southeastern point, rises to 1,705 feet. It is the highest point in Gaston County and one of two mountains in Crowders Mountain State Park, which covers 5,217 acres. The city itself sits at about 951 feet. It was incorporated on October 16, 1874, changing its name from White Plains to honor the 1780 Battle of Kings Mountain, fought in nearby York County, South Carolina.
Land that rises toward a 1,705-foot peak is rarely flat, and some driveways and backyards here are steep. We plan every pour around the grade: how the concrete will sit, where water will go and how a car will get up the driveway.
Historic neighborhoods
Kings Mountain has several places on the National Register: the Central School Historic District, the Margrace Mill Village Historic District, the West End Historic District and two railroad overhead bridges. Homes in those areas have older walks, steps and driveways, and they deserve repair work that fits their age.
A mill village house, for example, usually has a narrow walk and short steps. Replacing them with something oversized would look out of place. We keep the scale of the original and build it on a better base.
Outdoor living near the state park
With Crowders Mountain State Park next door, a backyard patio with a view of the ridge is a natural project. Stamped concrete is one option: they can look like slate or stone, take a color that fits the house and stand up to foot traffic. We seal stamped concrete to protect the color and the pattern and explain how often it should be resealed.
What we pour and repair here
- Concrete patios: patios cut into sloping yards, with a step down where needed
- Stamped concrete: slate and flagstone patterns for patios that face the ridge
- Concrete driveways: steep driveways with grip and proper drainage
- Sidewalks and walkways: walks and steps for older and newer homes
- Concrete slabs: sheds, garages and workshops
- Concrete repair: crack sealing, step repair and replacement of damaged sections
Getting to the job
The I-85, US 74 and US 29 interchange lies just east of the city, with NC 161 heading to Bessemer City and NC 216 to Cherryville. That makes it easy to reach most homes in the area. If your project is in the Cleveland County part of the city, we check permit rules with the city or county before we start.
Walks and steps in older neighborhoods
In the West End and around the old mill village, front walks are often narrow and steps are steep. We rebuild them to the same footprint where that suits the house, with more even risers and a base that will not shift. A small change in step height can make a walk much easier for older residents and visitors.
Driveways that climb
Some Kings Mountain driveways rise sharply from the street. On a steep grade, a smooth trowel finish is slick in the rain, and a hard break at the bottom scrapes bumpers. We use a heavier broom finish for traction and shape the bottom of the driveway so the slope eases into the street. Where the grade is extreme, we may suggest a landing area near the garage so cars have a flat place to stop.

Kings Mountain Questions
Can you build a stamped patio in my sloped backyard?
Yes. We level the area first, either by cutting into the slope or building up the base, and then pour and stamp the patio.
Do you work in the Cleveland County part of the city?
Yes. We work across Kings Mountain, in both the Cleveland County and Gaston County parts.
How often does a stamped patio need sealing?
Usually every two to three years, depending on sun and traffic. Sealing keeps the color strong and helps protect the surface.
