Decorative Concrete With a Solid Base
Stamped concrete starts as an ordinary slab. While it is still workable, it gets color and a pattern pressed into the surface, so it can pass for flagstone, slate, cobblestone, brick or wood planks while staying one continuous piece with no gaps for weeds. Around Gastonia it shows up most on back patios, front walks, entry steps and pool decks, and as a decorative band on an otherwise plain driveway.
The stamping process
Timing drives everything. We place and float the concrete like any slab, then spread a color hardener or release agent over it. When the surface is stiff enough to keep an impression but still soft enough to take one, rubber texture mats are set down in order and pressed in, and the edges and corners are tooled by hand. Once it has cured, we rinse off the release and seal the surface. On a July day, when Gastonia's average high is around 91 degrees, that working window closes fast, so decorative pours start in the morning with enough people to finish on time.
Ways to add color
- Integral pigment: mixed through the whole load, so a chip shows color instead of gray
- Dry-shake hardener: broadcast on top for a richer, harder surface color
- Antiquing release: a second tone that settles into the low spots for depth
- Stain: acid or water-based, applied after curing for variation
At the estimate we hold samples up against your brick, siding and roof in daylight before you choose.
Popular patterns
- Ashlar slate and random flagstone: the usual pick for patios
- Cobblestone and running-bond brick: good for borders and walks
- Wood plank: the look of a deck that never rots or needs boards replaced
- Seamless skins: stone texture without grout lines, with sawn joints
Stamped slabs still need control joints. We line them up with the pattern so they look like grout lines rather than cracks.
Base work matters more here
A crack in a broomed slab is a nuisance. A crack through a stamped pattern stands out. On Piedmont clay we pack the soil and a stone base just as carefully as we would under a driveway, add steel, and keep the thickness even so the slab stays whole.
Sealer is part of the finish
Sealer brings out the color, resists stains and keeps water from soaking in. Shaded patios grow mildew in humid summers, and near-freezing winter nights work on any surface that stays wet. Expect to reseal every two to three years, sooner in full sun or heavy use. Wet sealer can be slippery, so on walks, steps and pool decks we add a grit additive.
Where it makes sense
Stamping suits patios, walks, entries and borders. Across a whole driveway it adds cost, and tires wear through the sealer faster. Many homeowners compromise with a broom-finished drive and a stamped apron or edge.

Start to Finish
1. Pick pattern and color
Samples are compared with your house in daylight.
2. Build the base
We excavate, compact and form the area and set the steel.
3. Place, color, press
Concrete goes in, color goes on, and mats are pressed and edges tooled while the timing is right.
4. Rinse and seal
After curing, the release is washed off, joints are sawn, and sealer goes on.

Stamped Concrete Questions
Does stamped concrete get slick?
The pattern itself has grip, but a glossy sealer can be slippery when wet. On walks, steps and pool decks we blend a grit additive into the sealer.
How often should it be resealed?
Every two to three years for most surfaces. Full-sun patios, pool decks and anything driven on may need it sooner. Faded color, or water that soaks in rather than beading, means it is time.
Will a stamped slab crack?
Like any concrete, it can. Packed stone underneath, steel and joints hidden in the pattern keep cracks small and where they blend in.
Can my current patio be stamped?
The old slab cannot be stamped itself, but a stamped overlay can be applied over concrete that is still sound. If the patio is cracked, sunken or holds water, replacing it is the better route.
