Concrete for a Growing Mill Town
Mount Holly sits west of the Catawba River in northeastern Gaston County, about 12 miles from Gastonia, and it keeps concrete contractors busy for two reasons. The town has a historic core with homes and storefronts that date back generations, and it has grown fast. The population went from 13,656 in 2010 to 17,703 in 2020, up 29.6 percent, and the 2025 estimate is 19,033. Older properties need repair and replacement. Newer ones need patios, wider driveways and pads for sheds and carports.
How the town got its name
The post office here was called Woodlawn in 1838. When the Mount Holly Cotton Mill started in 1875, the town took its name, which honors yarn made at a mill in Mount Holly, New Jersey. The town was incorporated on March 11, 1879. The Carolina Central Railway, the first railroad in Gaston County, began serving it in 1860, and the Woodlawn Mill, built in 1906, was the first mill in the county served with electricity. The Mount Holly Cotton Mill is the oldest surviving mill in the county, and it and the Downtown Mount Holly Historic District are on the National Register.
A long history means a long range of house ages. Some driveways here were laid long before air-entrained concrete was common practice, and it shows in scaled, flaking surfaces. Others are newer but were poured over fill that settled. We look at what caused the damage before we recommend a fix.
Driveways that carry more than cars
Mount Holly is an industrial town as well as a bedroom community. American & Efird, which the town's encyclopedia entry calls the world's second-largest thread maker, is the largest textile firm here, Freightliner has been a major employer since 1979, and National Gypsum has run a wallboard plant in town since 2007. In a town with that kind of industry, some driveways end up holding a work truck or a trailer. A driveway that was fine for one sedan can crack when a loaded trailer turns on its edge every day.
When a driveway will see heavier loads, we plan for it: a thicker slab where needed, steel reinforcement, a compacted stone base and wider edges at the turn. We also add control joints at a sensible spacing so shrinkage cracks follow a straight line instead of wandering across the slab.
Slopes toward the river
The town sits at about 627 feet, lower than Gastonia, on ground that falls toward the Catawba River. Lots on a grade need a plan for runoff. We set the slab with a steady fall away from the house, avoid low spots where water sits, and look at where the water goes once it leaves the concrete. A patio or walk that just moves the puddle to the neighbor's side is not a fix.
What Mount Holly homeowners ask for
- Concrete driveways: replacements, extensions and extra parking for trucks and trailers
- Concrete slabs: shop floors, carport pads and shed bases built for the load
- Concrete patios: backyard slabs with a broom finish or a stamped pattern
- Stamped concrete: decorative patios and front walks with color and sealer
- Sidewalks and walkways: front walks, steps and paths around the house
- Concrete repair: crack repair, resurfacing worn areas and fixing sunken sections
Before the pour
We measure the area, mark utility locations through NC 811, check whether any part of the work reaches the street right of way, and confirm with the town whether a permit applies. Then we set forms, compact the base, place reinforcement and pour. We tell you how long to keep foot traffic and vehicles off the new concrete, and we explain why the wait matters.

Mount Holly Questions
Can my driveway handle a work trailer?
If it was poured thin or without a solid base, it may crack under repeated trailer loads. For a new driveway we plan thickness, reinforcement and base for the heaviest vehicle you park on it.
My old driveway is flaking on top. Does it need to be replaced?
Not always. If the slab is sound and the damage is only at the surface, resurfacing or repair may work. If it is cracked through and sinking, replacement usually makes more sense. We tell you which one we see.
Do you work near downtown Mount Holly?
Yes. We work on older homes near the historic district and on newer homes across town.
