Concrete on the Lake

Lake Wylie is a community on a peninsula along the shore of the lake of the same name, and concrete contractors who work here have to think about slopes and water on almost every job. The population rose from 8,841 in 2010 to 13,655 in 2020. Growth has strained roads and the water system, and York County at one point declared a moratorium on new construction to better plan development.

The lake itself

Lake Wylie began with the Catawba Dam, built in 1904. In 1924 the dam was raised, and the lake grew from 668 acres to 13,400 acres. It has about 325 miles of shoreline and borders York County in South Carolina and Gaston and Mecklenburg counties in North Carolina. In October 1960 it was renamed Lake Wylie, after Dr. W. Gil Wylie. The average depth is about 20 feet.

The community sits at about 564 feet. On lots that slope from the road down to the water, concrete has to manage runoff on its way to the lake.

Runoff and the lake

On a lakeside lot, every square foot of concrete changes where rain goes. A large patio or a long driveway sheds water fast, and that water heads downhill toward the lake. Good practice is to:

  • Slope slabs so water moves to a lawn or planting bed, not straight down a bare bank
  • Keep concrete washout far away from the shoreline
  • Use silt fencing on sloped jobs until the ground is stabilized
  • Avoid channeling roof water across a new slab

We plan every lakeside project with that in mind. If your lot needs a permit for work near the shoreline, we check before we start.

Outdoor living

Lake Wylie homeowners often want their backyards to be part of the lake experience. Common projects include:

Patios that face the water. A stamped concrete patio can look like stone and handle foot traffic, grills and furniture.

Walkways down the slope. A walk with built-in steps can make getting to the dock easier and safer, with a textured finish for wet feet.

Parking pads. Boats, jet skis and trailers need a place to park. A pad for a trailer needs a firm base and enough thickness for the load.

Our Lake Wylie services

  • Concrete patios: patios that face the lake
  • Stamped concrete: textured walks and patios near the water
  • Sidewalks and walkways: walks and steps down sloped lots
  • Concrete driveways: steep and long driveways with drainage in mind
  • Concrete slabs: boat, trailer and shed pads
  • Concrete repair: crack repair and fixing undermined edges

The state line

The state line runs close by. A GPS resurvey moved the line about 150 feet south, placing several properties in South Point Township, North Carolina. If you are not sure which side of the line your lot is on, we can figure out which rules apply.

Getting materials to the site

Some lakeside lots are narrow or steep, with the work area well below the street. In those cases a concrete pump or a conveyor can carry concrete from the truck to the forms. We plan access at the estimate so there are no surprises on pour day, and we protect lawns and plantings along the route.

Three counties on one lake

Lake Wylie touches York County in South Carolina and Gaston and Mecklenburg counties in North Carolina, and it was renamed in October 1960 for Dr. W. Gil Wylie. Because the shoreline crosses state and county lines, two neighbors on the same cove may answer to different offices. We confirm which county covers your parcel before we plan permits or locates.

Lake Wylie Questions

Can you build a walkway down to my dock?

Yes. We plan the path, add steps where the slope needs them and use a textured finish for grip. We check whether any shoreline rules apply first.

Will a large patio cause runoff into the lake?

Any hard surface sheds water. We slope the patio so runoff goes to a lawn or planting bed instead of straight down the bank.

Can you pour a pad for my boat trailer?

Yes. We compact a firm base and make the slab thick enough for the trailer's load.
