Concrete Work in Christmas Town
McAdenville is one of the smallest towns we serve as concrete contractors, and one of the most visible. The town had 890 residents in 2020, but more than 600,000 vehicles drive through each year to see its Christmas lights. The display started in 1956 with help from Pharr Yarns, and it now includes 375 lit trees and more than 200 wreaths on the town's light poles. When people drive slowly past your house for a month every year, the front walk, steps and driveway get noticed.
A mill town on the river
McAdenville was incorporated in 1881 and named after Rufus Yancey McAden, president of McAden Mills, the town's textile mill. Pharr Yarns was founded here in 1939. The town sits on the South Fork Catawba River, where a dam forms McAdenville Lake in the middle of town. The McAdenville Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
A town that grew around a single mill and now has a National Register district has a lot of older houses. Original or near-original concrete on homes like these tends to mean narrow walks, short driveways and steps that have shifted over the years. We replace and repair that work with care for how it looks next to the house.
Front of the house first
With that many visitors in December, the concrete facing the street gets the most attention.
Front walks. A cracked, heaved walk is a trip hazard for you and for guests during the busy season. We remove the old walk, compact a new base and pour a walk with a clean edge and a consistent broom finish.
Porch steps. Old steps tend to settle and tilt. We rebuild them with even risers and a non-slip surface.
Short driveways. Many driveways in town are narrow. If there is space, we can widen them or add a parking pad, and we look at how water will drain once the paved area grows.
Stamped borders. Some homeowners want a little more character, like a stamped border on a broom-finished walk. It is a modest upgrade that suits older houses well.
Timing around the holidays
In December, traffic through town is heavy in the evenings. We schedule work so concrete is poured and cured before the season starts, or after it ends, and we avoid blocking streets when visitors are coming through. Concrete also cures more slowly in cold weather. Late fall pours need a plan to protect the surface from frost, such as curing blankets, and a little more time before anyone drives on a new driveway.
McAdenville Lake and the South Fork
With the river and a dammed lake in the middle of town, drainage matters. We slope new concrete to move water away from the house and onto ground that can take it, and we keep concrete washout away from storm drains and the river. On the lower streets near the lake, we also check whether the ground under an old slab has stayed wet for years, since soft, saturated soil needs to be dug out and replaced with compacted stone before a new pour.

McAdenville Questions
Can my new walk be done before the Christmas lights season?
Usually, if we schedule early in the fall. Concrete needs time to cure, and cold nights slow it down, so we plan the pour with enough time to spare.
Will a new driveway look out of place on an older street?
It does not have to. A plain broom finish, a sensible width and clean edges look right on most older homes. New concrete starts lighter and weathers over time.
Can you fix just my porch steps?
Yes. We rebuild single sets of steps and repair broken edges and treads.
