Old Town, Steady Growth

Dallas is about four miles north of Gastonia, and as concrete contractors we find it has a character all its own. It was founded in 1846, incorporated in 1863, and is the oldest incorporated town in Gaston County. It served as the county seat until 1911, when the seat moved to Gastonia. The town had 4,488 people in 2010, 5,927 in 2020 and an estimated 6,392 in 2025. The work here runs from replacing old driveways and walks near the square to new patios and slabs for shops and sheds.

The square and the streets around it

The Dallas Historic District is a group of eight buildings bounded by Holland, Main, Gaston and Trade streets. It includes the former Gaston County Courthouse, built in 1848 and renovated after an 1868 fire, the 1848 county jail, the Smyre-Pasour House and Rhyne Store from 1850, and the 1852 Hoffman Hotel, now home to the Gaston County Museum. The Hoyle House and the Eli Hoyle House are also on the National Register.

Streets near the square have some of the oldest homes in town, and likely some of the oldest concrete. On houses that old, it is common to find walks poured in short sections over the years, driveways with several generations of patches, and steps built up layer by layer. When it is time to replace them, we go back to a sound base and a single, continuous pour where possible, with control joints placed on purpose.

Drainage toward Long Creek

Dallas lies in the Long Creek watershed. Dallas Branch and Little Long Creek drain the town, and Long Creek flows into the South Fork Catawba River. That means most yards in town drain toward one of those streams, some faster than others.

For concrete, the takeaway is simple. Water should leave a slab quickly and not pool against the house. We build every driveway and patio with a steady slope, and on lots where the yard falls toward the house, we talk about fixing the grade before we pour.

Larger lots, more concrete

Where a lot has room, it opens the door to longer driveways, turnarounds, detached garage slabs and shop floors. A slab that will hold a vehicle lift, a workbench or heavy tools needs the right thickness and reinforcement, and a vapor barrier underneath if the space will be enclosed. Long driveways need joints at regular spacing and a solid base along their whole length, especially where they cross soft ground or a low spot.

Close to US 321 and Gaston College

US 321 is the main road through Dallas, running 13 miles north to Lincolnton and 34 miles to Hickory. Gaston College's main campus is on 321 just west of the business district. Easy highway access makes it simple to get trucks to most jobs in town, and we schedule larger pours early in the day to avoid the afternoon heat in summer.

Questions we ask at a Dallas estimate

How old is the current concrete, and was it ever patched? Where does the roof water go? Will anything heavier than a car park on it? Is there a tree within reach of the new slab? The answers tell us how deep to dig, how thick to pour and where the joints belong.

Biggerstaff Park in Dallas hosts the yearly Shelby Hamfest, a gathering of amateur radio operators, and the town square still draws visitors to the Gaston County Museum in the old Hoffman Hotel.

Dallas Questions

Can you pour a slab for a detached garage in Dallas?

Yes. We size the slab for the building, add thickened edges where the walls sit, place reinforcement and a vapor barrier, and set it level for the framing. We check with the town and county on permits for the building.

My long gravel driveway washes out. Should I switch to concrete?

Concrete holds up well if the base is solid and the drainage is right. We look at where water crosses the driveway first, because concrete over a washout will still crack.

Do you work near the old courthouse square?

Yes, along with every other part of Dallas.
