A Flat, Square Start for What Comes Next
Concrete slabs are the pads that something else sits on: a storage building, a detached garage or shop, a carport, a room addition, a standby generator or a heat pump. Unlike a patio, a slab usually has to be dead level, square and sized exactly to whatever goes on top. We can work straight from your building plans or the manufacturer's footprint, and coordinate with the shed dealer or builder you choose.
Size and height
A shed or garage kit needs a pad matched to its footprint, sometimes with a small lip, and it has to sit high enough that rain cannot run in under the walls. On Gastonia's rolling lots that usually makes the slab deeper on the downhill side. We shoot the grade with a level or laser, work out how much fill and compaction the low side needs, and set forms so the top comes out flat and square.
Depth and steel
HomeGuide's slab cost guide treats 4 inches as the standard depth and prices 6- and 8-inch slabs for heavier loads. Most sheds and patio-style pads are 4 inches. A garage, or any slab under a car lift, trailer or heavy machinery, needs more depth, a thickened edge where walls bear, and rebar. For garages, shops and additions, the building plans and the local inspections office set the requirements, and we pour to them.
Stopping ground moisture
Slabs inside a building need a vapor barrier underneath so ground moisture cannot wick up through the floor. That matters around Gastonia, where clay subsoil often stays damp and summers are humid. The barrier goes over the packed stone with the seams lapped and taped, and it is protected during the pour. Open-air pads generally do not need one.
Included in a slab job
- Layout squared to your plans or kit dimensions
- Digging and compacting the subgrade
- A packed crushed stone base
- Forms, thickened edges and anchor bolt locations
- Vapor barrier for enclosed slabs
- Rebar or mesh to match the use and the plans
- Placement, then a trowel finish indoors or a broom finish outdoors
- Joints and a proper cure
Matching the finish to the job
Garage and shop floors get a smooth trowel finish that sweeps clean and can be coated later. Carports and outdoor pads get a broom texture for traction. If you have the layout, anchor bolts or straps for the building can be set while the concrete is still wet.
Equipment pads
Heat pumps, generators, trash can spots and mailbox posts all need small level pads. They go quickly and are often added to a larger pour, which saves a second trip and a separate minimum charge.

Start to Finish
1. Check plans and grade
We go over your plans or kit size and shoot the grade where the slab will sit.
2. Dig, fill and base
The area is excavated, built up where needed, compacted, and topped with stone and a vapor barrier.
3. Square the forms
Forms are squared and leveled, with thickened edges, steel and bolt positions set.
4. Pour and cure
The slab is placed, finished for its purpose, jointed and cured before building starts.

Concrete Slabs Questions
What thickness works for a shed pad?
Most sheds sit fine on 4 inches of concrete over packed stone. For a large shed, or one that will hold a riding mower or ATV, we add steel and thicken the edges.
Will my slab need a permit?
That turns on what the slab supports and which town or county you live in. Garages, additions and larger buildings usually go through building inspections. We call the office that covers your address before we pour.
When can construction start on a new slab?
Light framing can often begin within a few days, but concrete keeps gaining strength for about four weeks. Hold off on heavy machinery and loads until then. We set dates based on the mix and the weather.
Should a garage slab have a vapor barrier?
Yes, if the garage will be enclosed and you want to limit moisture. It also helps if you plan to coat or seal the floor later on.
