Concrete West of Lake Norman

Denver is a community on the west side of Lake Norman in Lincoln County, and lake living shapes the work we do as concrete contractors here. The census-designated place had 2,309 residents in 2010 and 2,697 in 2020, but the wider Denver area along NC 16 is much larger. Homes near the lake and the woods call for outdoor spaces that make the most of both.

From Dry Pond to Denver

The community was called Dry Pond until 1873, named for a small pond that dried up in summer heat. D. Matt Thompson, headmaster of Rock Springs Academy, led the effort to rename it after Denver, Colorado. Lake Norman came much later. Duke Power built Cowans Ford Dam in 1962, flooding Catawba River bottomland to create the lake.

Denver sits at about 889 feet and is about 25 miles north of uptown Charlotte. NC 16, a four-lane road, runs along its southwest edge, and NC 150 meets it at the northwest corner, leading to Mooresville, Maiden and Lincolnton. The Catawba County line forms Denver's northern border.

Building near the lake

Lots near the water usually slope toward it. That means every driveway, patio and walk changes where rain goes. We plan concrete so water leaves the slab toward a lawn or a planting bed, not straight down a bare bank toward the lake. We keep concrete washout well away from the water, and on sloped lots we set silt fencing until the ground is stable. If your lot is close to the shoreline, we check for any rules that apply before we start.

What Denver homeowners ask for

Stamped patios. A stamped patio that looks like stone or slate fits the lake setting and costs less than real stone.

Walks to the water. A walkway with steps makes it safer to reach the dock. We give it a texture that grips when wet.

Boat and trailer pads. A trailer is heavy at the tongue and wheels. A pad for one needs a firm base and enough thickness.

Longer driveways. Many lots sit back from the road. Long driveways need joints at regular spacing and a solid base along their whole length.

Our Denver services

  • Concrete patios: patios that face the water or the trees
  • Stamped concrete: slate-look patios and dock walks
  • Concrete driveways: long driveways and replacements
  • Sidewalks and walkways: walks and steps down sloped lots
  • Concrete slabs: boat, trailer, shed and garage pads
  • Concrete repair: crack repair and fixing undermined edges

Weather on the lake

Summer sun dries fresh concrete quickly. We pour early in the day in summer and keep the surface damp while it cures. In winter, we use air-entrained concrete and protect fresh pours from frost.

A boat pad, patio or driveway near the lake all start with the same question: where will the water go? We answer that before we pour.

A wider area than the CDP

The Denver census-designated place is small, but the 28037 ZIP code covered 13,030 people back in 2000, and many of them live on lots near the lake or along NC 16. We work across that whole area, from homes in the middle of town to houses on the water and on the wooded roads in between. Wherever the house is, we start the same way: a visit, a look at the slope and soil, and a written estimate.

On lots that back up to the woods, we also check for roots and buried stumps where the slab will go, since organic material left under concrete rots and leaves a void.
